The Mishnah in Sukkah (5:1) needs no introduction: whoever did not see the Simchas Beis Hashoeiva never saw simcha in his days. During Sukkos in the Beis HaMikdash, water for the nisuch hamayim was drawn from the Shiloach below Har HaBayis, and around that drawing the courtyard celebrated all night — the golden menoros whose light reached every chatzer in Yerushalayim, the Leviim with their instruments on the fifteen steps, gedolei hador dancing with torches. In English you'll see the name written a few ways — Simchat Beit HaShoeva, Simchas Beis Hashoeiva, Simchat Beit HaShoeivah — all the same שמחת בית השואבה.
In Yerushalayim, It Never Stopped
Without the Beis HaMikdash there is no nisuch hamayim. The simcha itself, Klal Yisroel kept. Every night of Chol HaMoed, communities hold a Simchas Beis Hashoeiva — live music, singing, circles of dancing that build for hours in the beis medrash or around the community sukkah. In most places that means an evening. In Yerushalayim it means the whole city: walk through Geulah between ten and one on a Chol HaMoed night and you pass from one court's niggun into the next without a quiet stretch between them.
In 2026 the nights run Sunday, September 27 through Thursday, October 1, and the minhag ha'olam is that the later nights build bigger, toward Hoshana Rabbah.
Where to Go
The chassidishe courts of Meah Shearim and Geulah are the heart of it. The famous open door is Toldos Aharon: the big beis medrash fills nightly with tier above tier of dancing chassidim in the golden Yerushalmi caftans, keyboard and choir driving it, cold drinks flowing from spigots in the sukkah next door, the ezras nashim galleries full. The public is welcome every night of Chol HaMoed, on the house's terms — no phones out, no pictures, period.
Around it, court after court and shtiebel after shtiebel run their own — each with its own niggunim, its own crowd, its own peak night. The yeshivos hold theirs too, and a guest who steps into the circle is a participant, not a spectator. The municipality and community centers add public Simchat Beit HaShoeva events with live bands in squares around the city, which are the easy option with younger children.
There's no ticket and no printed schedule. Pick a night, dress the part, walk into Geulah after dark, and follow the music. From a hotel near Geulah you can hear where the night is happening from your own street.
Going Right
- Dress for shul. Jacket or at least a white shirt for men; for women, the standard of the neighborhood you're entering — in Meah Shearim that means fully tznius, married women covered. Nothing determines how you're received more than this.
- Phones stay in pockets inside the courts. Toldos Aharon says it explicitly; the whole neighborhood assumes it.
- Men on the floor, women in the galleries. Couples should set a meeting spot and time before splitting up. The crowds are real and the phones are away.
- Dance or stand at the edge. The one wrong place is standing still in the middle of the circle's flow.
- Kids do well early. The first hours of the night are full of families; after midnight it's a different intensity. With a stroller, keep to the edges of Meah Shearim's narrow streets.

Simchas Beis Hashoeiva is the night half of Chol HaMoed; Birkas Kohanim, the Jerusalem March, and the rest of the day calendar are the other half. Most families do one or two real late nights out of the five, not all of them, and pick the night after the quietest day.

No. These are not ticketed events — communities open their simcha to guests, usually with drinks or refreshments given out freely from the adjoining sukkah. If you took hospitality, a quiet donation to the mosad is a mentchlich touch, never a requirement.
