When Is Rosh Hashanah in Israel? (2026, 2027, 2028)

Same dates in Israel as everywhere in the world, two days, 1–2 Tishrei:

Licht bentchen in Jerusalem for 2026 is 6:10 PM on Friday, September 11 — the Yerushalayim minhag of 40 minutes before shkiah, earlier than everywhere else in the country. Second-night candles after 7:26 PM on Motzaei Shabbos, and Yom Tov goes out Sunday at 7:24 PM in Jerusalem. The rest of the country lights around 20 minutes before shkiah. Your shul's luach has the final word.

Is Rosh Hashanah One Day or Two Days in Israel?

Two days, in Eretz Yisroel exactly as in chutz la'aretz. Families planning a first Tishrei trip sometimes assume the one-day schedule they know from Pesach and Sukkos applies here too. It doesn't. Rosh Hashanah is the exception, and it always was.

The background is the one every schoolchild here learns: Rosh Hashanah falls on Rosh Chodesh itself, the single date where even Yerushalayim, in the days when beis din was mekadesh the chodesh al pi eidim, could not know in advance which day would be declared the first of Tishrei. If the witnesses came late in the day, both days had already been kept holy. The two days became fixed practice in Eretz Yisroel as well, and halacha treats them as one long day, yoma arichta.

The practical line for a visitor: there is no shortened Israeli schedule for Rosh Hashanah. Everyone keeps both days, and the country's shutdown covers both.

Rosh Hashanah 2026 Falls on Shabbos — What That Changes

In 5787 the first day of Rosh Hashanah is Shabbos. Worth knowing before you book flights:

• No tekios on day one. Shofar is not blown when Rosh Hashanah falls on Shabbos. The first tekios of 5787 sound on Sunday, September 13, from every shul in the country at once. If shofar at the Kotel is the moment your family is traveling for, it's a Sunday morning.
• Tashlich moves to the second day, Sunday afternoon.
• Erev Rosh Hashanah is a short Friday. Licht bentchen 6:10 in Jerusalem, hotels close check-in before candles, and the pre-chag rush is compressed into the morning. Arrive Wednesday or Thursday.
• Friday night through Sunday night with no commerce and no transit. Shabbos runs straight into both days of Yom Tov. Whatever the family needs, have it in hand by Friday midday.

2027 falls the same way. In 2028 Rosh Hashanah is Thursday and Friday, running straight into Shabbos from the other side.

What the Country Is Actually Like

Elul is audible here. Sephardi selichos before dawn from the beginning of the month; Ashkenazim from Motzaei Shabbos before the chag, September 5 in 2026. At the Kotel, the midnight selichos gatherings grow week by week until the crowds run into the tens of thousands as the Yamim Noraim get close. The supermarkets build their honey-and-pomegranate displays, the shuk sells simanim platters, and every office and school is wishing everyone a ksiva vachasima tova by the last week of Elul.

Erev Rosh Hashanah the country crescendos: markets packed until midday, flowers on every corner, radio playing the year's retrospectives. Then licht bentchen, and the switch flips. Traffic thins to nothing. The storefronts are dark. What's left is the Yom Tov itself — families walking to shul, seudos carrying through open windows, and on the day of tekios, shofar sounding from shul after shul across every neighborhood in the country.

The seudos are the same table your family sets at home. The difference is that here the rimonim were picked an hour away and the tamarim in the simanim grew down the road in the Jordan Valley.

What's Open and What's Closed

• Public transportation: none on Yom Tov. Trains stop about two hours before candles; buses wind down Erev-Shabbos style and don't run either day. Taxis, including Gett, keep working and are the practical exception.
• Stores, restaurants, banks, offices: closed both days, as on Shabbos. In 2026 that means Friday afternoon through Sunday night without a break.
• Hotels: fully open. Tishrei is their season. The kosher hotels run complete Yom Tov meal programs, and the better ones arrange minyanim and a baal tokea in-house.
• Ben Gurion: open on Rosh Hashanah, unlike Yom Kippur. Foreign carriers fly; El Al and the Israeli airlines don't fly on Yom Tov. Landing on the chag itself leaves you with very few ways to get anywhere — don't.
• Hospitals, on-rotation pharmacies, Hatzolah, MDA: all running as always.

Yom Kippur: Nine Days Later, the Country Stops Completely

Whatever quiet Rosh Hashanah brings, Yom Kippur (Monday, September 21, 2026) is of another order, and there is nothing like it anywhere. Ben Gurion shuts down entirely; in 2025 it closed from 2:00 PM on Erev Yom Kippur until about 10:30 the following night, and 2026 should look similar. Radio and television go silent. Not one car moves on the highways — which is why, in the secular cities, the children famously fill the empty freeways with bicycles for the day.

In Yerushalayim the day is wall-to-wall tefillah, Kol Nidre through Neilah, and the final selichos night before the fast brings crowds to the Kotel that Israeli press has put at a hundred thousand. Flying In for Rosh Hashanah 2026

Flights: as of mid-2026, El Al carries most of the North America traffic and is the steadiest booking for the season. Delta has announced a JFK–Tel Aviv resumption for early September, days before Rosh Hashanah; United has pointed at September as well; American is suspended into January 2027. This picture moves — confirm with the airline before ticketing, and book early. Tishrei flights fill first and cost the most.

Weather: mid-September is still summer. Jerusalem days around 29–34°C, dry, with cool nights up in the hills. Rain is not a factor. Pack for sun, plus whites and a kittel for davening, and a layer for night.

Timing: land by Wednesday or Thursday, September 9–10, and give the family a day to settle and stock up before the short Friday. If the trip runs through Yom Kippur or Sukkos, the days between the chagim are when the country is open and buzzing — the Old City, the Kotel tunnels, day trips.

Rooms: Jerusalem's kosher hotels sell out Tishrei before any other season. Families who book by late spring choose their hotel. Families who book in Elul choose from what's left. The lay of the land is at where to stay in Jerusalem.

Everything above happens all over the country. It concentrates in Jerusalem. Shofar from both sides of every street, the Kotel plaza drawing thousands on Yom Tov morning, midnight selichos in the Old City all season, and more serious minyanim within a fifteen-minute walk than most cities have altogether — every nusach, every style, including the one your family davens.
