Sukkot 2026 in Jerusalem, Day by Day

The week has two speeds. Yom Tov is Shabbos-quiet. Chol HaMoed is the busiest the city gets all year, because half of Eretz Yisroel is off from school and work and out with the kids. In 2026 it lays out like this:

The Big Events of the Week

Birkas Kohanim at the Kotel

Twice each Chol HaMoed Sukkos, on the fixed dates of 17 and 20 Tishrei, hundreds of kohanim duchen together over a Kotel plaza filled wall to wall. In 2026 that comes out to Monday, September 28 and Thursday, October 1. Israeli press put the second of the fall 2025 gatherings at some 40,000 people. The Chief Rabbis attend, and the sound of the plaza answering is something children remember long after the trip.

Getting there is the whole strategy. Shacharis starts 8:45, duchening about 9:30 and again at Musaf about 10:30. Come through Jaffa Gate or the Dung Gate by 8:30 if you want standing room with a sightline, earlier with a stroller. Security lines run longest between 9:00 and 10:00. The plaza fills from the front, and the upper back areas empty out fastest afterward, which is where you want to be standing when it's time to leave with kids.

Simchas Beis Hashoeiva, Every Night of Chol HaMoed

Chazal say whoever never saw the Simchas Beis Hashoeiva never saw simcha. In Yerushalayim that never became a line about the past. Every night of Chol HaMoed, the chassidishe courts and yeshivos of Geulah and Meah Shearim run live music and dancing into the small hours. Toldos Aharon is the famous open door: tiers of dancing chassidim in golden caftans, the ezras nashim galleries full, cold drinks handed out from the sukkah next door. Different courts peak on different nights, and walking those streets at midnight you pass through one court's niggun into the next.

The Jerusalem March

The Chol HaMoed parade through the center of town has run for decades; the 68th was Sukkos 2025, from Bezalel Street down through King David Street to the First Station, with bands, dance troupes, soldiers, and delegations from all over the world, alongside the municipality's festivals in the parks. The 2026 date comes out closer to the chag. Whichever afternoon it lands on, count on serious road closures in the center of town and plan that day's outing accordingly.

Simchas Torah, and Hakafos Shniyos

In Eretz Yisroel, Shemini Atzeres and Simchas Torah are one day, Shabbos, October 3 in 2026, and there is nothing in the Jewish world like it here. Hakafos overflow the shuls of Geulah, Meah Shearim, the Bucharim quarter, and Kikar Belz into the streets, night and morning. And when Yom Tov goes out, the city keeps dancing: hakafos shniyos with live bands, the biggest at the Kotel plaza and at Mercaz HaRav, while chutz la'aretz is only starting its own Simchas Torah that night.

A City of Sukkahs

What makes Sukkos here different is not any single event. It's that the whole city builds. Mirpesets sprout schach twenty stories up. Restaurants trade their sidewalk tables for sukkah walls. Hotels put up certified sukkahs on their terraces, from the mehadrin hotels' family-seudah sukkahs to showpieces like the hanging sukkah in the Waldorf's atrium, which Israeli press reports say seats around 500. Walk through Geulah or Nachlaot after dark and you smell Yom Tov cooking through canvas walls the whole length of the street.

The days before the chag, the arba minim markets are their own event. Machane Yehuda and the Geulah streets fill with vendors, and buyers check esrogim under a loupe like diamond dealers. Whatever your standard, a Yemenite lulav, a particular esrog lineage, Chazon Ish measurements, somebody in that market carries it. Come a day or two before Erev Sukkos if you want to browse in peace rather than grab in a crush.

Chol HaMoed in Jerusalem

September 27 through October 1 in 2026. The whole country is out those days, so the planning question is not what's open but when to go:

• The Old City, early. Kotel at sunrise, the rooftops, and out before the groups arrive. The Kotel Tunnels and Ir David book out over Chol HaMoed; reserve before the chag.
• The family attractions run holiday programming all week: the Biblical Zoo and aquarium, the Israel Museum, Tower of David, Ein Yael, the park festivals. Opening time or after 3:00 beats the middle of the day.
• A sukkah walk through Geulah, Meah Shearim, and Nachlaot at dusk costs nothing and is what everyone remembers.
• One day trip out of the city, at most. Roads to the Dead Sea and the north run heavy all week. If you go, leave by 7:30, and know where your sukkah for lunch is before you leave, not when you're hungry.

Sukkot Meals in Jerusalem

Three ways families keep everyone fed in a sukkah all week:

• The hotel's meal program. The kosher hotels run their Yom Tov seudos in the sukkah. Whether Chol HaMoed meals are served there too varies by hotel; that's one of the specifications worth having in writing before you book.
• Restaurant sukkahs. Concentrated in the center of town and the frum neighborhoods. Reserve for lunch where they take reservations. Our kosher dining guide covers reading the teudah before you sit down.
• Takeout plus a sukkah on the route. For trip days: a mehadrin bakery or market, and a public or restaurant sukkah you picked out in advance.

Where to Stay: the Sukkah Decides

For this particular week, accommodation stands or falls on one question: where is your sukkah? A kosher hotel answers it structurally. A certified sukkah with confirmed schach and hashgacha, seudos served inside it, a rain plan. That's why most visiting frum families book one of the Sukkos hotels in Jerusalem, and it's why we confirm each hotel's exact sukkah specifications in writing before a family commits.

Apartments can work. Some listings advertise a porch sukkah, and some of those are exactly as advertised. But you are trusting a listing on the things your rav would ask about: open sky, proper schach, who builds it and when, what happens when it rains, whether the whole building shares it. Practical Notes

• Getting around: no transit on the Yom Tov days, which in 2026 are both Shabbos anyway. On Chol HaMoed the light rail and buses run normal weekday schedules. Inside the city, walking beats driving every time.
• Weather: late September days in the high 20s to low 30s Celsius, dry, and the Yerushalayim night air turns genuinely cool. Sukkah suppers want a sweater. By Hoshana Rabbah there's a small chance of the first rain of the season.
• Arrive by Wednesday or Thursday (September 23–24). Erev Sukkos 2026 is also Erev Shabbos, licht bentchen 5:52. Nobody wants to be landing that afternoon.
• Book months out. Sukkos sits with Pesach at the top of the Jerusalem hotel year, and the family rooms at the mehadrin hotels go first. Families who plan in the spring choose; families who call in Elul take what's left.
