When Is Sukkot in Israel? (2026, 2027, 2028)

Sukkos starts on 15 Tishrei everywhere. What's different in Eretz Yisroel is how the days divide, which the next section lays out.

Jerusalem times for 2026: licht bentchen Erev Sukkos 5:52 PM (the Yerushalayim 40-minute minhag); Yom Tov out Motzaei Shabbos 7:07 PM. Hoshana Rabbah candles Friday, October 2 at 5:43 PM straight into Shemini Atzeres on Shabbos, out October 3 at 6:58 PM. Everywhere else in the country lights about 20 minutes before shkiah; your shul's luach is the last word.

How Many Days Is Sukkot in Israel?

Sukkos is seven days everywhere. In Eretz Yisroel only the first is Yom Tov. For 2026:

• Day 1, Yom Tov (Shabbos, Sep 26) — this year Shabbos and Yom Tov in one.
• Days 2–6, Chol HaMoed (Sun, Sep 27 – Thu, Oct 1) — seudos in the sukkah, arba minim every morning, and the country open and traveling.
• Day 7, Hoshana Rabbah (Fri, Oct 2).
• Then Shemini Atzeres, one day, which here is also Simchas Torah (Shabbos, Oct 3).

In chutz la'aretz the first two days are Yom Tov and Shemini Atzeres and Simchas Torah split into two days. A visitor keeping Yom Tov sheini in Eretz Yisroel has a real sheilah on his hands — melacha, tefillin, lulav on the second day — and it belongs with your rav before you fly, not after you land.

What the Country Is Actually Like That Week

Nowhere else does Sukkos happen at the scale of a country. In the days before the chag, lumber and schach sellers take over parking lots, and sukkahs go up everywhere you look: mirpesets twenty stories up, restaurant patios, hotel pool decks, hospital courtyards, army bases, gas stations on the highway. The arba minim markets fill with men checking esrogim under a loupe.

Then the week runs on two speeds. Yom Tov is Shabbos-quiet. Chol HaMoed is the single biggest domestic-travel week of the Israeli year — school vacation, half the workforce off, and every national park, trail, museum, zoo, and beach running holiday programming at capacity. For a visiting family this is the week you see the country at its most alive, and you plan around the fact that everyone else had the same idea.

The week closes with aravos at daybreak on Hoshana Rabbah, Tefillas Geshem on Shemini Atzeres, and hakafos that spill out of the shuls. After Yom Tov ends, many cities hold hakafos shniyos with live bands in the public squares, while chutz la'aretz is only beginning its own Simchas Torah that night.

The Events, and Why Jerusalem Is the Center

Every region runs Chol HaMoed festivals. The anchor events of the week are in Yerushalayim:

• Birkas Kohanim at the Kotel, twice during Chol HaMoed — in 2026 expected Monday, September 28 and Thursday, October 1 (the Western Wall Heritage Foundation posts the final schedule closer to the chag) — with crowds in the tens of thousands.
• Simchas Beis Hashoeiva every night of Chol HaMoed, the biggest of them in the chassidishe courts of Geulah and Meah Shearim. Where to go and how to visit →
• The Jerusalem March, the decades-old Chol HaMoed parade through the center of town.
• Street hakafos on Simchas Torah, which exist nowhere else in the world the way they exist in Jerusalem's frum neighborhoods.

Sukkot Programs in Israel

Like Pesach, Sukkos has grown a market of organized hotel programs: an operator takes over part or all of a hotel and provides the catering under one hashgacha, a sukkah big enough for every guest, minyanim, kids' programming, shiurim, entertainment. Programs run in Jerusalem, at the Dead Sea, and up north, priced per person for the chag or per night.

The other route, the one we arrange, is booking a kosher hotel that runs Sukkos properly as a matter of course: a certified sukkah with specifications you've seen in writing, Yom Tov meal programs, and a location inside the celebration instead of a shuttle ride from it. For most families coming to Jerusalem, the right hotel does what a program does, with more room on dates and budget.

Either way, the questions are the same ones your rav would ask. Whose hashgacha is on the kitchen, and is it also on the sukkah? Does the sukkah seat everyone at once or in shifts? The Practical Part

• Flights: Tishrei is the most in-demand travel window of the Israeli year. As of mid-2026, El Al carries most of the North America traffic, with Delta and United pointing at September resumptions; confirm with the airline and book months out. Land by Wednesday or Thursday, September 23–24 — Erev Sukkos is a short Friday.
• Crowds and prices: hotels sell out and rates peak. Chol HaMoed attractions are heaviest from late morning to mid-afternoon; go at opening.
• Driving: intercity roads run heavy all Chol HaMoed, especially toward the Dead Sea and the north. Inside Jerusalem, walk or take the light rail.
• Weather: late September is warm and dry, days in the high 20s to low 30s Celsius, and sukkah suppers in the Jerusalem hills want a sweater. Around Hoshana Rabbah the first rain of the season becomes possible — right when we start saying Mashiv Haruach.
• What's closed: the Yom Tov days shut the country like Shabbos, and in 2026 both fall on Shabbos anyway. On Chol HaMoed nearly everything is open.
• Eating out: many kosher restaurants build a sukkah for the week. Not all, and lunch seats go fast. Pick the sukkah before you pick the day trip.

Where to Base the Family

Jerusalem, for most families. The Kotel events, the street-level chag in the frum neighborhoods, the density of restaurants with sukkahs, and a Simchas Torah that exists nowhere else. Start with Sukkot in Jerusalem and the kosher hotels in Jerusalem directory.

Some families split the week with a few Chol HaMoed nights in the north (glatt kosher hotels in Tzfat) or at the Dead Sea (mehadrin options at the Dead Sea). It works — if you've confirmed the sukkah situation at the second stop before committing, and budgeted for the holiday traffic getting there.
