Seminary parent trip · Michlalah

Michlalah, visiting your daughter.

The formal parent Shabbos in Cheshvan, Chanukah week, and Shavuos graduation. The hotels with realistic Bayit Vegan proximity, and the delicate balance of being present without overwhelming her first year away. Verified April 2026.

The visit windows.

Hotel proximity.

Michlalah is in Bayit Vegan. No kosher hotel is inside Bayit Vegan. The four JRM options are all a Shabbos walk or a weekday taxi from the dorm — Jerusalem Gate and Prima Palace are the most walkable.

What the Michlalah parent Shabbos looks like.

Thursday: parents land and check in. Friday morning: optional seminary open-class visits (the seminary publishes a schedule 2 weeks out). Friday afternoon: erev-Shabbos prep, Kotel erev-Shabbos if time. Friday night: your daughter joins you at the hotel seudah or you walk together to a Bayit Vegan host family the seminary placed her with.

Shabbos day: many mothers daven at the hotel minyan; your daughter may daven at seminary or join the hotel. Seudah shniya is typically at the hotel together. Shabbos afternoon: Michlalah runs a principal's shiur or parent-daughter program. Motzei Shabbos: melaveh malka at the seminary or a hotel brunch. Sunday: daughter returns to dorm for seder; parents can take a free sightseeing day before Sunday night departure.

The delicate balance — what we actually hear from parents.

The hardest part of a seminary parent trip isn't logistics — it's restraint. Your daughter is building an independent relationship with Torah, with Eretz Yisrael, and with herself. The best parent trips are the ones where parents show up, participate in the programming, take her out for Motzei Shabbos coffee, and leave. Trying to extract her from dorm life for three days is counterproductive; she'll resent it and so will her roommates. Shorter and more present beats longer and hovering.

Booking timing.

Parent Shabbos fills 4-5 months out. For Cheshvan 2026, book this Iyar/Sivan. Chanukah fills 3-4 months out. Shavuos graduation 3-4 months. Purim 2 months.
