Fast day guide · imminent 5786 / 2026
Tisha B'Av 2026 in Jerusalem, where the churban actually happened.
The one day of the year when the destruction of the Beis Hamikdash isn't a historical concept — it's a location. Tisha B'Av 5786 begins at sundown Wednesday, July 22, 2026, and ends at nightfall Thursday, July 23, 2026 (observed on its correct date — no nidcha this year).
Imminent — still placing 2026 stays. If you need a room near the Kotel for the fast, call or write now.
Next year (5787): sundown August 11 through nightfall August 12, 2027 — after this year’s fast.
The Three Weeks and the Nine Days
Tisha B'Av is the culmination of a three-week mourning period beginning with Shiva Asar B'Tammuz. The Nine Days — from Rosh Chodesh Av through the fast — intensify the restrictions: most poskim hold that meat and wine are not eaten from Rosh Chodesh Av (except on Shabbos), music is not listened to, haircuts and laundry are generally avoided, and new clothing is not worn.
Families planning to arrive in Jerusalem during the Nine Days should know that hotel kitchen menus typically reflect these restrictions automatically — the kitchen is aware of the period and adjusts accordingly. If you have questions about your specific family minhag (some have stricter customs from the week of Tisha B'Av itself), consult your rav before the trip.
One important scheduling note: when Tisha B'Av falls on Shabbos, the fast is nidcha — pushed to Sunday the tenth of Av. In this case, the fast begins motzei Shabbos (after Shabbos ends) rather than Friday night, and certain Nine Days restrictions may be adjusted; your rav should be consulted for the details specific to that year. In 5786 (July 22–23, 2026) and again in 5787 (August 11–12, 2027), Tisha B'Av falls mid-week and is observed on its correct date — no nidcha either year.
The Day Itself
Erev 9 Av: seudah hamafsekes at your hotel around 6pm (hotel kitchen handles the eggs-ash-bread or whichever minhag your family follows). The fast begins at shkiah. Ma'ariv and Eicha at the Kotel Plaza or at a neighborhood shul. Families often walk to the Kotel together after Eicha for an hour of quiet sitting on the ground.
9 Av morning: kinnos at the Kotel or at an in-hotel minyan. Kinnos extends until midday with meforshim shiurim in between. Nightfall brings ma'ariv, havdalah (or equivalent depending on minhag), and a dairy break-fast at the hotel.
The afternoon follows its own rhythm. Many Jerusalem shuls and yeshivos run afternoon kinnos sessions and Churban-themed shiurim — a quieter continuation of the morning's avodah. Mincha at the Kotel draws a large crowd and carries a particular weight on this day.
Between the morning kinnos and Mincha, many families return to the hotel to rest; fasting with young children in the Jerusalem summer heat is easier when the hotel is nearby and the afternoon pace is unhurried.
Hotel Proximity to the Kotel on Fast Day
Walking distance matters more on Tisha B'Av than any other day of the year. Many families prefer to avoid taxis on the fast day altogether — and a closer hotel makes that easier. Haneviim Boutique is the closest JRM option (about a 25–30 minute walk to the Kotel), with Prima Palace next at roughly 30–35 minutes. Yirmiyahu 33 and Jerusalem Gate in Romema are about 45 minutes on foot — a long way on a fast day, so families staying there usually rely on an in-hotel kinnos minyan rather than walking to the Kotel.
What it costs
Room rates during Tisha B'Av fall in our published bands — roughly $200–$450 per room per night at the value and mid-tier hotels, and higher at the premium properties and across Shabbos and Yom Tov dates. Full Yom Tov board programs are quoted per family. See our pricing page for the hotel-by-hotel table.
