Sukkot 2026 in Jerusalem, Day by Day

The single most useful thing to internalize: Yom Tov days are Shabbos-quiet, Chol HaMoed days are the busiest of the Jerusalem year. Here is how the week actually lays out in 2026:

Times are for Jerusalem (candle lighting per the city's 40-minutes-before-sunset custom); event schedules follow the organizers' standing patterns and should be reconfirmed close to the chag — the Western Wall Heritage Foundation publishes final Birkas Kohanim details at thekotel.org.

The Signature Events

Birkas Kohanim — the Priestly Blessing at the Kotel

Twice each Chol HaMoed Sukkot — on the fixed Hebrew dates of 17 and 20 Tishrei, which in 2026 fall on Monday, September 28 and Thursday, October 1 — hundreds of kohanim bless a Kotel plaza packed wall to wall. The 2025 fall gathering drew an estimated 40,000 people; the Chief Rabbis attend, and the sound of the plaza answering the brachah is something families talk about for years.

Practical: Shacharis starts 8:45 AM with the blessings at roughly 9:30 (Shacharis) and 10:30 (Musaf). Arrive by 8:30 for standing room with sightlines; earlier with a stroller. The plaza fills from the front — the upper rear areas clear out fastest afterward. Security lines at the Old City gates are longest 9:00–10:00, so come through Jaffa Gate or the Dung Gate early and unhurried.

Simchas Beis Hashoeiva — Every Night of Chol HaMoed

The Mishnah says that whoever never saw the Simchas Beis Hashoeiva — the Temple-era water-drawing celebration — never saw real joy. Jerusalem takes that personally: every night of Chol HaMoed, yeshivos and chassidic courts across Geulah and Meah Shearim fill with live music and circle-dancing that runs into the small hours. The famous courts — Toldos Aharon above all — open their batei medrash to the public, with galleries for women and cold drinks flowing from the adjoining sukkah.

The Jerusalem March

The decades-old Chol HaMoed parade — its 68th edition ran during Sukkot 2025, from Bezalel Street through the city center down to the First Station, with marching bands, dance troupes, IDF units, and delegations from dozens of countries alongside the municipality's park festivals. The 2026 date and route are published closer to the holiday; expect a mid-Chol-HaMoed afternoon and plan around serious road closures in the center of town that day.

Simchat Torah — and Hakafot Shniyot

In Israel, Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah share one day — Shabbos, October 3 in 2026 — and Jerusalem's frum neighborhoods celebrate it in the street: hakafos that overflow the shuls of Geulah, Meah Shearim, the Bucharim quarter, and Kikar Belz. When Yom Tov ends, the city keeps going with Hakafot Shniyot — public second hakafos with live bands, the largest at the Kotel plaza and at Mercaz HaRav — while Jews outside Israel are just beginning their own Simchat Torah night.

A City of Sukkahs

What makes Sukkot in Jerusalem different from Sukkot anywhere else isn't one event — it's that the whole city builds. Balconies sprout schach twenty stories up. Restaurants trade sidewalk tables for sukkah walls. Hotels raise certified sukkahs on their terraces — from the mehadrin hotels' family-meal sukkahs to showpieces like the Waldorf Astoria's famous hanging sukkah in its atrium, which Israeli press reports say seats around 500. Walk Geulah or Nachlaot after dark and the whole street smells of Yom Tov cooking through canvas walls.

In the days before the chag, the arba minim markets are an event of their own — Machane Yehuda and the Geulah streets fill with vendors, and buyers inspect esrogim under loupes like diamond dealers. Whatever your standard — a Yemenite lulav, a particular esrog lineage, Chazon Ish measurements — Jerusalem's market carries it. Come a day or two before Erev Sukkot for calm browsing.

Things to Do on Chol HaMoed

Chol HaMoed (September 27 – October 1 in 2026) is when Jerusalem is fully open and fully packed — Israeli schools are on vacation and the whole country day-trips. What works:

• The Old City, early. Kotel at sunrise, the rooftops promenade, and out before the tour-group crush. The Kotel Tunnels and Ir David book out for Chol HaMoed — reserve in advance.
• Family attractions with holiday programming — the Biblical Zoo and aquarium, the Israel Museum and Tower of David (both typically run Sukkot family events), Ein Yael, and the park festivals. Go at opening or after 3 PM.
• A neighborhood sukkah walk — Geulah, Meah Shearim, and Nachlaot at dusk, when the sukkah lights come on, cost nothing and are the thing visitors remember.
• One out-of-city day at most. Roads to the Dead Sea and the north run heavy all week; if you go, leave by 7:30 AM — and know where you'll find a sukkah for lunch.

Sukkot Meals in Jerusalem

Three reliable paths to eating in a sukkah all week:

• Your hotel's meal program. The kosher hotels run full Yom Tov meals in their sukkah, and the better ones serve Chol HaMoed meals there too — confirm which meals, and whether the sukkah seats everyone at once or in shifts.
• Restaurant sukkahs. Many kosher restaurants build one for the week, concentrated in the center of town and the frum neighborhoods. Lunch seats go fast on Chol HaMoed — reserve where possible. Our kosher dining guide explains how to read the teudah before you sit down.
• Picnic + public sukkah. For day-trip days, takeout from a mehadrin bakery or market plus a public or restaurant sukkah en route is the flexible option — plan the sukkah stop before the outing, not during it.

Where to Stay — Hotels vs. Apartments

For Sukkot specifically, accommodation stands or falls on one question: where is your sukkah? A kosher hotel answers it structurally — a certified sukkah with confirmed schach and supervision, meals served inside it, and a rain plan. Apartment rentals can work for Sukkot — Jerusalem has a real short-term market and some listings advertise a porch sukkah — but you are trusting the listing on the details that matter: Is the sukkah actually kosher (open sky, proper schach)? Practical Notes

• Getting around: No transit on the Yom Tov days (both Shabbosos in 2026). On Chol HaMoed the light rail and buses run normal weekday schedules and the city center is walkable — walking beats driving for anything inside Jerusalem.
• Weather: Late September days are warm (high 20s–low 30s°C / mid-80s°F) and dry, evenings genuinely cool in the hills — sukkah dinners want a sweater. By Hoshana Rabbah there's a small chance of the season's first rain.
• Arrive early: Fly in by Wednesday–Thursday, September 23–24. Erev Sukkot is a short Friday in 2026 with candle lighting at 5:52 PM — you do not want to be landing that afternoon.
• Book months ahead: Sukkot is Jerusalem's peak hotel season alongside Pesach; the mehadrin hotels' family rooms go first. Serious planning starts in spring; by Elul you're choosing from what's left.
