Shabbos & Yom Tov
Is Rosh Hashanah one day or two days in Israel?
Two days — Rosh Hashanah is the only Yom Tov observed for two full days in Israel exactly as outside Israel. In 2026 it runs from Friday evening, September 11 through nightfall on Sunday, September 13, and because the first day falls on Shabbos, shofar is blown only on Sunday.
Every other major holiday (Pesach, Shavuos, Sukkos) has one Yom Tov day in Israel versus two abroad — Rosh Hashanah is the exception, kept as two days (treated as one long day, "yoma arichta") even in Yerushalayim.
For visitors this means there is no shortened Israeli schedule to plan around: hotels run full Yom Tov meal programs through both days, and the country's Shabbos-style shutdown spans both days as well.
